As a language therapist I often see the outcomes of special ed services from our local schools. I have met several committed and caring special ed teachers that, unfortunately, are not trained to meet the needs of language impaired children.
I wish I could gift PPS a class size of 12 students in K - 3, and Orton-Gillingham or Slingerland training for K-1-2 and SPED teachers.
Unfortunately the demands of a special ed teachers and expectations of a diverse classroom slight the validity and value of Orton Gillingham training. Reading in a structured and sequential program become secondary if not at all.
The Blosser Center for Dyslexia Resources trains language therapists; has a clinic for struggling readers; has a summer school program; serves as a clearinghouse for information for families seeking solutions.
